Definitions of "Special Wastes" we are licensed to handle:

Oxidisers H2 Exhibit highly exothermic reactions when in contact with other substances, particularly flammable substances.

Highly Flammable H3-A Exhibit any of the following:
  • liquids with a flash point below 21°C
  • substances which may become hot and finally catch fire in contact with air
  • solids which may readily catch fire after brief contact with a source of ignition and continue to burn
  • gases which are flammable in air at normal pressure
  • substances which, in contact with water or damp air, evolve highly flammable gases.

Flammable Liquids H3-B with a flash point between 21°C and 55°C.

Irritant H4 non corrosive substances which can cause inflammation through immediate, prolonged or repeated contact with the skin or mucous membranes.

Harmful H5 substances which may involve limited health risks if they are inhaled or ingested or if they penetrate the skin.

Toxic H6 (including very toxic) substances which may involve serious, acute or chronic health risks and even death.

Carcinogenic H7 substances which may induce cancer or increase its incidence.

Corrosive H8 substances which may destroy living tissue on contact.

Infectious H9 substances containing viable micro organisms or their toxins which are known or reliably believed to cause disease in man or other living organisms.

Teratogenic H10 substances which may induce non hereditary congenital malformations or increase their incidence in a developing foetus.

Mutagenic H11 substances which may induce hereditary genetic defects or increase their incidence.

H12 Substances which release toxic or very toxic gases in contact with water, air or acid.

H13 Substances capable, after disposal, of yielding another substance, e.g. a leachate, which posseses any of the characteristics listed above.

Ecotoxic H14 substances which present, or may present, immediate or delayed risks for one or more sectors of the environment.

Thresholds for certain hazardous properties in H3-B to H8:

If the waste satisfies ALL of these conditions it shall be treated as having none of the properties H3-B to H8 listed above and therefore need not be considered as "Special"

  1. Flash point above 55°C.

    Total concentration of substances classified as;

  2. very toxic less than 0.1%.
  3. toxic less than 3%
  4. harmful less than 25%
  5. corrosive (and assigned risk phrase R35) less than 1%.
  6. corrosive (and assigned risk phrase R34) less than 5%.
  7. irritant (and assigned risk phrase R41) less than 10%.
  8. irritant (and assigned risk phrases R36, R37 or R38) less than 20%.
  9. carcinogenic (and placed in category 1 or 2 of that classification) less than 0.1%

Risk Phrases:
R34 causes burns
R35 causes severe burns
